After School Programs

Wagoner School

Wagoner School Offers after school programs for students in first and second grade.  The majority of these programs run in six week intervals so that more students can participate.  These programs are all held from 2:10 to 3:00.  Transportation home is not provided. Watch for fliers to come home and the school newsletter for dates and grade levels.  All programs are filled on a “first come basis” with a waiting list for openings.  Students who misbehave or have excessive absences will be dropped from the program after parents have been notified.  All students registered will be kept after school unless we receive notification from parents to send them home.

Math Tutorial

Students in first and second grade who are struggling with math concepts will be recommended by their classroom teacher to participate in a math tutorial program.  Students will work with real math for the real world.

Student Council

Wagoner Schools students council is composed of second grade students chosen by their classmates to represent their class.  The student council meets once a month on Tuesdays. They will plan school wide activities including a food drive in the fall, box top and label drive for February, and various contests throughout the other months.

Science Club

There will be a science club offered to first and second grade students.  Four different sessions are being planned throughout the school year. Topics being planned include: dinosaurs, job of an archeologist and the meaning of extinction;  space & constellations, artic, rainforest and desert habitat and weather.

Reading Tutorial

First & second grade students who are struggling with reading skills will be invited by their reading teacher to participate in a reading tutorial program.  Teachers will work with students on phonics, sight words, vocabulary, and comprehension.  The A+ and Reading On Line computer programs will be one tool used along with guided readers and skill based games. 

Writing Club

A writing club for second graders will take place in the spring for four weeks.  They will create books, poems, and write stories with emphasis on how to write complete descriptive sentences.

Art Club

First and second graders will have the opportunity to participate in an art club.  Participants will create projects using various techniques.  Second graders will attend the first semester and first graders will attend second semester.  All sessions will meet once a week. All sessions will be on Thursdays.

Basketball Club

Second grade students will be chosen by their classroom teacher to try out for the after school basketball club. Coach Pranchke will work with the students on basic basketball skills of dribbling, shooting, passing and team work skills.

Computer Club

During the second semester, second grade students will be invited to the computer club where internet safety will be discussed.  Students will research a topic on the Internet using “bookmarked” sights to write a report with pictures.  Students will also learn how to present their research in a “Power Point” presentation.  All sessions will  meet once a week.

Drama Club

Drama Club is a program designed for second grade students.  The participants will look at different types of theatrical performance and will learn Readers Theater.  A short culminating performance will take place in December for session one and in May for session two.

Junior Book Club
(JBC)

Book Club students read a variety of novels throughout the school year.  They are responsible for reading an assigned number of chapters before each meeting in order to participate in group discussions and activities related to those chapters.  JBC members also keep a Response Journal to record information about each novel.

Art Enrichment Club

Art Club members are provided the opportunity to explore the world of art through the study of famous artists and their masterpieces.  Students discuss many art movements that have evolved through history and demonstrate their understanding of each artist’s work by using the same techniques, materials and tools as the masters did.  The end result is the creation of an Art Gallery displaying the students’ works.

The story takes place in the 1800's, during the California Gold Rush, and two young boys provide questionable maps for gold seekers.  This theater production will be ready for all to enjoy in May of 2008.

Tutorial Enrichment Program
(TEP)

100 students, divided into ten small groups, receive individualized instruction from teachers and instructional aides.  Focus is on improving reading and math skills and strategies, as well as homework help.  These tasks are accomplished through the use of computers, hands-on materials, and small group instruction.  A+Computer Reading and Study Island Math Programs are used in the computer lab during tutorial.

Rickover Jr. High

After school clubs provide numerous opportunities for the students including involvement in the community, expanding the “in-class” knowledge, and the use of creativity in the arts.  Students will have the chance to build on their social, emotional, and cognitive abilities, while having fun.

Athletics

Athletics is built around one key aspect: Sportsmanship. Sportsmanship helps students be respectful, responsible, and successful in all aspects of life.  Being a part of athletics will also teach students how to use teamwork to accomplish one common goal.   Each of these traits can be applied to learning on the court as well as learning in the classroom.

    

Students who participate in athletics must maintain a passing grade (no “F”) and portray exceptional behavior (no referrals and/or suspensions) in class.

    

Basketball

Supervisor: Mr. Crutcher

The basketball season will begin in October and end in early January.  Practices will be held after school from 2:30 to 4:30.  As an initiative for students to keep up their grades and stay active on the team, a short study session will be held before every practice. Basketball is offered to 7th and 8th grade students who have exceptional behavior and grades. 

    

Volleyball

Supervision:  Ms. Bouma & Ms. Sirota    

Volleyball will be held in the gym starting in  January to the end of February.  Volleyball is offered to students in 7th & 8th grade. Games and practices will be on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. 

  

Track

Track practices and meets will be held from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the track or in the gymnasium.  Students will compete in several meets with a chance to qualify for the state meet.  The track season begins in April and continues through May.

Intramurals

Intramurals offer every student a chance to participate in an after school sport.  Students do not need to try out for intramurals, rather they sign up for the team in their homeroom.

Community Service

The Community Service Team calls attention to the importance of volunteerism in school and the community.  This unique program provides an ideal opportunity for our school to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism throughout our student body, and to recognize those students who have particularly distinguished themselves through volunteer work.

Computer Club

Garden Club

The Garden Club will meet on Mondays from 2:30 to 3:30 P.M. in Room 10.  Garden Club was set up to help maintain the care of the courtyards at Rickover Jr. High School.

Science Club

After school tutoring is in alignment with the Illinois State Standards for education.   Overall, students will enhance the knowledge gained in class and demonstrate a desire to continue to learn.


Chess Club

”The only true strategy game.”

Strategy is a key element to the game of Chess.  Chess Club will meet on Wednesday afternoons in room 18 or 19.  Meetings will begin on September 27, 2006.

Enrichment Program

Supervisor:  Miss Hartman

The Enrichment Program is a selected group of students who show exceptional work habits and grades.  Students who are chosen will be working on projects that include a countries research and a presentation.  Enrichment will meet twice a month under the supervision of Miss Palkoner.

Spanish Club

Supervisor: Mrs. Vega

Students will explore the differences between different Spanish speaking countries.   Also, students will learn basic conversational Spanish.  Meetings will begin in January in Mrs. Vega’s classroom.

Challenger Program

Supervisor: Ms. Boggess & Miss DeJong

The Challenger Program is designed to expose students to a hands on approach to astronomy.  Also, students will gain a greater appreciation for astronomy.  This program is a living memorial from the families of the Challenger Space Ship.  Meetings will begin in the spring in Miss DeJong’s classroom.

National Junior Honor Society

Supervisor: Mrs. Yates

The National Junior Honor Society is a national organization set up in schools to honor those students who maintain exceptional grades throughout the entirety of their education.  The N.J.H.S. has set the following goals for all students:
     * To create an enthusiasm for scholarship
     * To stimulate a desire to render service
     * To promote leadership
     * To develop character
The Rickover chapter of N.J.H.S. holds meetings once a month and as needed in room 37.

Peer Mediation

  Peer mediation helps you look at a situation before it becomes a problem.”

Peer mediation teaches students to talk out problems at school and everywhere.  Students who utilize the Peer Mediation process will learn to solve problems in a civilized manner before they are blown out of proportion and cause other problems.  Peer Mediators are selected based on grades, behavior, and ability to handle stressful, difficult situations.

D.R.A.M.A. Club

“Drama is an exciting way for students to express themselves creatively without writing.”

D.R.A.M.A.  will meet every Monday and Friday after school from 2:30 to 4:15 in the gym.  The D.R.A.M.A. season will begin with team building activities and then rehearsals will begin in January.  Demonstrating Responsible Attitudes Maturely & Appropriately is the motto.

Project H.O.P.E. stands for Hispanic Opportunity Program Enhancement.  The overall goals for Project H.O.P.E. are to increase the graduation rate, improve basic skills, and encourage the participation of Latino students in higher education.

Student Council

Student Council is a student-selected group of individuals who work together to plan events for the school as well as the community.   A few of the events include school dances, food drives, Box Top collections, etc.  It is the mission of student council to expand students’ minds to the political arena and democratic process by allowing the students to govern themselves in an open self-governing format in preparation for their future.

Young Eagles Aviation Program

Supervisors:  Miss DeJong, Mrs. Swacker, & Ms. Carwright

Each month 10-12 seventh grade students will attend an introductory aviation program at Gary Municipal Airport.   This program is sponsored by The Young Eagles.  This program is geared twards encouraging students to become airplane pilots.  The Young Eagles are also connected to the famous Tuskegee Airman who will host two all school assemblies.

Other Honored Programs

Students who exemplify hard work and diligence, good behavior, and exceptional grades may be chosen for one of the many honored programs at Rickover.  These programs are unique in that students are hand selected by teachers and administration based on overall grades and behavior.
