A Program for Second Graders to use from Home

Since the Study Island state assessment program is completely web-based, students can access it from any computer with an Internet connection and a standard web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape). Results from students study sessions are recorded and made available to their teacher and you. This also includes results from sessions completed at home. The Math program is divided into the Illinois Learning Standards (ILS) and then divided by the Standards (Topics).

Each topic contains about 20 to 25 questions with explanations. All topics are accompanied by a lesson, which includes some brief information about the material covered by the questions in the topics. It is helpful to view the lesson before answering the questions in the topic. (Students will benefit most if an adult goes over this step with them as well as helping them read the explanations.)  Follow the instructions below, in order to use the program:

Directions

1. Go to www.studyisland.com

2. Your child will enter his/her Username and Password and then click “Login”. (We’ve been practicing this at school so your student should know how to do this part.)

3. The teacher has created specific topics (lessons) that will be required of your child to work on in school and at home. These topics supplement the skills and support the goals that are being taught in the classroom. Your child must "pass" all topics before taking the "Post Test".

4. To pass a topic, your child must satisfy the topic’s passing requirements which are based on a minimum number of questions answered (usually 10) and a minimum percentage correct. (If possible, sit with your child to be sure that he or she is taking time to read and think about the answers.  Avoid giving the answer to your child since then the test will show what you know instead of what your child knows.)   A blue ribbon icon is displayed next to each topic passed with the minimum percentage listed or higher.

5. When your child passes all topics in all sections independently, he or she has completed the program and will be well prepared for third grade math next year.
